Angry Earth
The theory of plate tectonics helps us to understand why some places are more hazardous to live than others, but the theory does not explain why humans choose to live in areas prone to earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis.
|
Can humans tame nature or do we have to learn to live with the risk of natural hazards? Can we build cities that can survive all that nature throws at them?

M9.0 Sendai earthquake and tsunami, Japan 2011
The M 9.0 Tohoku earthquake occurred at 2.26pm on Friday 11 March 2011, the epicenter was 70km off the coast and approximately 30 km under the surface. The undersea megathrust earthquake triggered a huge tsunami which perhaps was more destructive than the initial quake. This quake has been recorded as the world’s fifth largest earthquake since 1900 and the worst in Japan’s history. In total there were 16, 000 deaths and a further 6,000 people were injured. Over a million homes were fully or partially destroyed and 4 million homes were left without power. The tsunami inundated the Fukushima Daichi nuclear power station, cutting power to the cooling systems resulting in hydrogen gas explosions.
