On 11 March 2011, a powerful earthquake hit the north-eat of Japan. The resulting tsunami killed almost 20, 000 people, but also destroyed the cooling system and caused meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Radioactive water is still leaking into the Pacific Ocean and molten nuclear fuel is located somewhere within the complex.
The Guardian (link here) has produced an interactive to show how this nuclear power plant can be cleaned up. All eyes are on the plant's operators who are carrying out an unprecedented multi-billion dollar operation to make the plant safe. Current worries are that some of the 1, 000 water storage tanks are springing leaks causing more pollution and that another earthquake would be disasterous.
